CMMC Fundamentals

The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment (OUSD(A&S)) developed the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) framework to safeguard sensitive national security information and launched CMMC 2.0, a comprehensive framework to protect the defense industrial base from increasingly frequent and complex cyberattacks. By incorporating cybersecurity standards into acquisition programs, CMMC provides the Department with the assurance that contractors and subcontractors meet DoD’s cybersecurity requirements. 

CMMC includes a flow-down requirement and subcontractors will be subject to the CMMC level associated with data stored, processed, or transmitted.

Once awarded, the Certification is valid for three years.
